Meditation on Breath or WHO AM I is better?


Dear Sir, ( Acharya Girish Jha) Trust all is well with you and Maa’m.

I need your advice on the meditation technique that I had been following (I’ve practising irregularly for the last 2 years). I’d been following the Shaanti meditation technique (counting 1-25 breaths both on the inhale and the the exhale and then 1-25 breaths by counting only the inhales).

I’d recently chanced upon an article on the internet in which quoted Ramanna Maharishi.

The point it made was that Ramanna Maharishi had said that it was better to meditated upon the question Who am I rather than the breath because when one loses track of the breath the awareness is lost whereas if one meditates upon the question Who am I then one gets to the root (at the thougth level).

The way described to meditated upon Who am I was:
Ask yourself – To whom does this thought arise?
Answer it by – It arises to me.
Then question that – Who am I?

I tried putting these three thoughts to me throught out the day (I did think of a lot of other things but my mind used to drift back to these questions eventually). And afterwards I used to become aware of the breath. Then the breath awareness decreased. But I was thinking these 3 thoughts a lot of time.
Which one should of the two techniques should I practice?
